May 4th Bitterroot River Update

Posted by Jeff Gray on

It’s amazing to me that we are still effectively fishing our local waters. The Mayfly hatches this spring have been like no other. Caddis, March Browns, BWO’s , Grey Drakes and even a few Skwalas have been in play over the past week and fishing has been above average for sure.  With this cool weather trend I think the river is going to stay fishable over the next week - 10 days.  This should really bode well for the summer months. The longer we can keep the snow up high the longer it will last. Let’s hope we don’t see 90+ degrees in May, June or July. Look for the fishing to turn more subsurface as we head into the middle of the month. Big Stonefly nymphs, worms and the good ole Prince Nymph will be killer patterns to prospect with. With the rising river conditions, there’s sure to be new obstacles in the river channel. Please be cautious and scout any unsuspecting situations.

The Mo is also a springtime favorite for our guides. Fishing over on this big tail water is fantastic this time of year. If you’ve been there, than you already know, if not, give it a try, it rarely disappoints.
